Gapped Connectivity
The largest studying and resource hubs of the New York University designed by starchitect Philip Johnson, Elmer Holmes Bobst Library bears a controversial reputation of intellect and stress. While praised for its efficiency in functionality, it has witnessed three suicides in its 75’ by 83’ overly-scaled indoor atrium.
The proposed design school sits on top of the Bobst library and seeks to preserve the integrity of its existing functionality while transforming its interior relationship with the atrium. Distinguishing itself as an autonomous complex, the design school is orgranized in two volumns that are tied together with zigzagging sky bridges. A gap of 40-feet width divides the volumns, liberating the Bobst atrium to open air and introducing natural light into workspaces. A series of smaller gaps that puncture through floor plates also create porocity and visual connectivity within the halves, allowing them to be separate but together?
