Live/ Work/ Rent
This project challenges the normative live/work cooperative housing model through the lens of a heightened housing shortage in the near future of the Greater Boston Area. To increase inhabitable areas and stretch the limit of co-living, we introduce a deep-plan typology with incorporated nested accessory dwelling units (conceptually conceived as the Thickened Wall), which could be used either as storage space or living space. The design enables residents to generate extra income through renting out part of their units.
Conceived somewhat as a social experiment, the design of this cohousing provides units not only catering to nuclear families but also to other group structures ranging from 1-10 persons. Communal facilities, along with the Thickened Wall, connect the units into a community and induce unavoidable encounters of the residents. The questions at stake are:
- How do we live together? How do we share (light, air, space)?
- How to live and work at the same time?
- How to live economically?
